Class Information

A music program for 2 ½  to 5 year old’s

Our Music & Movement classes run on week mornings and afternoons, and offer a quality music learning experiences for 2.5 – 5-year-olds, presented over the course of an 8-week term.

Most importantly, our classes are playful and inclusive and will ignite in children what will hopefully be a life-long love of music. Focus is on unconscious learning so that children are not inhibited by abstract musical concepts – allowing them to become creative musical thinkers before going on to more formal instrumental education.

Classes for 2 ½ to 3 year old’s

To begin children in their music journey we start with ½ hour sessions. The children are accompanied by an adult for the duration of the class.

The music lessons are a combination of singing, action songs, finger play, rhythmic movement with piano accompaniment and dramatisation of songs.

The children also experience and play a broad range of percussion instruments.

Towards the end of the year, as the children turn three, and depending on their confidence, they may start building independence and begin to do some of the activities unaccompanied.

Classes for 3 to 4 year old’s

In this 45-minute class, the children begin working more independently, start developing their creativity and expand on their expression of rhythms.

The children play and learn with instruments at the beginning and end of the class. Instruments such as tuned percussion begin to be integrated into the lesson as the children start developing means to express their creativity.

The children are accompanied by an adult in the movement segments, only if they are needed. This allows the children to hear and think for themselves, once they are confident enough to do so. The children always love this part of the lesson.

The structure of the lesson involves a combination of singing, action songs, body percussions, rhythmic movement with piano or instrumental accompaniment and dramatisation of songs. The children begin to recognise elements of music through response to what they hear.

Parents are often delighted to see how quickly the children tune in to what is happening in the music. It is a good example of how children benefit from working independently.

Classes for 4 to 5 year old’s

This 45-minute class is perfect for beginners and children who began in one of the earlier classes. The children will usually work independently of parents for the duration of the class.

The structure of the lesson involves a combination of singing, action songs, body percussions, rhythmic and improvised movement with and without instrumental accompaniment and dramatisation of songs. Improvisation and creative thinking is an important component to this class as is the continuity of unconscious learning. This is so that the children are not inhibited by set musical ideas – allowing them to become musical thinkers before they become instrumental players.

This is an ideal time for the child to have an opportunity to discover the joys of improvisation and self-expression.

The activities are more complex, focusing on developing their singing voices, sense of beat and understanding of rhythmic patterns, and movement for form and expression.

All music and movement classes

We must remember that the most important aspect of coming to the class is for your child to have a happy time, feel comfortable and progress at his or her own pace.

We have small class sizes which mean we will be able to provide a deeply personal experience for your child where they feel they are able to learn while having fun.

Today’s scientific research has shown that participating in music learning from a young age can improve a child’s physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development.
